The 2018 Transition
After 22 years of daily ownership and operation, Mary and Roger made the decision to step back.
In early 2018, ownership officially transitioned to their son, Christian Wolters. This was not an outside sale or corporate acquisition. Christian had already been deeply involved in operations and the long-term direction of the property. The transition was steady and intentional — keeping the Inn within the family that built it.
A Year of Expansion
2018 marked more than a transition in ownership.
That same year, the Grand Terrace was constructed, expanding the outdoor experience for guests. Soon after, the Wine Bar concept was introduced — adding curated wine evenings and gathering spaces while preserving the intimate character of the property.
These additions reflected growth, but not departure. The foundation remained the same land Mary once cleared herself.
A Continuing Legacy
The Red Horse Inn remains family-owned and operated in Landrum, South Carolina.
What began in 1995 with open land and a bulldozer continues today through stewardship rather than reinvention. The cottages still sit where they were carefully placed. The views remain unchanged. The spirit that built the Inn continues to guide it.
